Huw Powell is really
the source for most of this information, but only because he did it first
and then wrote about it. Since I eventually had this done to my car by
Huw, I would have written about it. But why duplicate effort? So,
I'll just give you a quick explanation, and if it sounds interesting, head
on over to Huw
Powell's Type-85 Strut page.
Intro:
The Audi Coupe or 4000 only has a cheesy prop rod for the hood. This
is
really out of place on such a great car, and I was determined to fix
it. I'd heard about some people welding a big 5000-style strut to their
strut housing, pointing up, and welding it to the hood. I thought
this was a possibility, but seemed to always end up looking a bit fugly.
Huw had a brainstorm, and Version 2 of the hood prop strut project
was born.
Summary:
You're going to be welding brackets and little balls to your fender
and hood, attaching a strut between them and painting it to look factory.
It's not difficult, and if you REALLY mess up, bondo works well enough
to plug any nasty holes.
